Overview

Lone Echo is a unique VR title for the Oculus Rift and Oculus Touch controllers.

Unlike many VR games, which need to restrict the player character's movement due to certain limitations, Lone Echo gives unconstrained 360° movement in a virtual representation of outer space.  Precise 1-to-1 hand-tracking allows players to navigate through environments with all the fluidity and control of an astronaut aboard the International Space Station.

In the single-player mode, the player assumes the role of Echo-1 (AKA "Jack"), a work robot meant to assist Capt. Olivia Rhodes ("Liv") in the day-to-day operation of a mining site nestled in the rings of Saturn.  As the game begins, a space anomaly appears nearby and causes electrical disturbances aboard the station which Jack and Liv attempt to repair.  An immense, mysterious vessel eventually emerges from the anomaly in an event which destroys the station and separates Jack from Liv.  Concerned about her safety, Jack follows a trail of breadcrumbs his partner left behind when she traveled to the vessel in search of functioning life support systems...

Lone Echo also features a competitive multiplayer mode (available together or as a separate package) called Echo Arena.

What I worked on

Each link below will take you to an in-depth look at the development of a section I was responsible for.

Primary Level Designer on the majority of the Mysterious Vessel gameplay

Damaged Sensor Satellite

Mysterious Vessel: Rescue, Part 1

Mysterious Vessel: Rescue, Part 2

As Level Design Support:

Station Interior: Oxygen (O2) Garden

Station Interior: EVA Prep Room + Airlock

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Pre-Production

    • Collaborate on the design of the game's systems, player abilities, and forms of the Bio Threat organism

    • Develop small levels focused on evaluating prototyped features' "fun factor" for possible inclusion in the final game

    • Plan and "greybox" a series of uniquely-themed puzzle rooms (the solution for each requires a different combination of the player's abilities and the core game systems)

    • Create spaces intended to rigorously test a variety of comfortability factors, and document a set of do's and don'ts for mission designs and level art geo

    • Help prototype and tune multiple attempts at a comfortable "continuous" turning model

  • Production

    • Draft several versions of an alternate gameplay sequence where Liv would accompany Jack in the vessel and the two would solve problems cooperatively
