Building to a big finish

After the big narrative reveal of the game (that Lycans are not the only type of half-breed in the world of The Order: 1886 and that this level was all about revealing a conspiracy between Lycans, vampires, and the United India Company), it's time to bring the level in with a big finish. Letting the player feel good about combatting the threat by lighting fire to the crates is only the first step to achieving a satisfying conclusion.

Then UIC guards show up. Then the fight continues as the fire spreads.

Then the Lycans show up!

What can kill a Lycan?

Designers sometimes disagree on a feature. Or they may have to adapt a design over time as it grows to fit the elements that surround it.

The Design Team had long discussions early on about what tools and weapons the player would have to combat and kill Lycans. Many of these were, of course, inspired by traditional werewolf lore:  can a Lycan only be harmed by silver objects? It's easy enough to have the Knights' knives have silver edges...  Does that mean only knights can kill Lycans?

What about guns?  Much of the game is centered around gunplay and cover...  Do the knights have access to silver bullets?  What if the player encounters a Lycan when he isn't carrying any Knight-faction weapons?

In the end, the decision was made to relax certain elements of our fiction.  Though knives would be the most common way of ensuring a Lycan kill (the "lock-in" combat encounters with these enemies require a knife execution to finish one), bullets and special weapons and other means needed to be possible causes of death so as to not paint ourselves into any corners.
